On August 15, Gateway hosted the first round of the first annual Sound of Music Competition. The competition sees schools from around KZN competing for R10,000 for the winning choir and R10,000 for the winning instrumental group. This money will go to the two winning school's music departments. The Sound of Music Competition is a celebration of culture and music and is part of Gateway's commitment to support KZN's musical culture.

The second and final round of the competition will be held on August 22 from 12h00 to 16h00 in Gateway's Palm Court where there will be performances by Sacred Heart Secondary, Maritzburg College, Sparks Estate and Durban Girls College.

The performances are opened by the KZN Youth Wind Band, conducted by Werner Dannewitz who is a judge for the Sound of Music Competition along with James Conrad, previously the Director of Opera for the Natal Performing Arts Council (now the Playhouse Company) as well as Mike Rodel, the Gateway Centre Manager and Sue Jagesur, Gateway's Marketing Manager.
