NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. Pietermaritzburg’s fourth annual Last Night of the Proms will take place on October 2 at 19h30 in the Pietermaritzburg City Hall. This concert, which promises an evening of glorious music, fun and nostalgia features Richard Cock who will conduct the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra, the Durban Symphonic Choir and the Maritzburg Singers. The Caledonian Pipe Band will play outside the City Hall before the concert and open the second half. Doors open at 18h30. A cash bar will be run by local service club and programmes, hats and streamers will be on sale. The same programme will feature in another Proms concert taking place in Durban a week later, this time sponsored by Nedbank. The Last Night of the Nedbank Proms will take place on October 9 at 19h30 in the Durban City Hall. In the tradition of London’s Albert Hall Last Night of the Proms, the Durban City Hall will come alive with music and revelry for a very special 10th birthday of the annual Proms concerts. Before the concert the KZN Youth Wind Band will play on the City Hall steps and the Caledonian and NMR Pipe bands will open the second half of the concert in the foyer. There will be a party after the concert in the basement Supper Room with music/entertainment by the Deez M Beez. Booking for both concerts opens at Computicket on September 1.
