NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. Celebrated performance poet Ike Muila is launching his new book and CD entitled GOVA at the next meeting of the Live Poets' Society in Durban. GOVA has been selected by booksellers for their Homebru promotion of local writing. Since making his debut at the Soyinkwa Institute of African theatre in Soweto, Muila has performed at numerous festivals. These include the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown, Arts Alive, Herman Charles Bosman, and Berlin International Poetry Festival. He recently returned from the Cambridge Contemporary Poetry Festival in England where he received huge acclaim. In 1998, he recorded a performance video called Jikeleza Train and in the same year won a poetry translation award from the English Academy. His work is featured on the CD Purple Light Mirror in the Mud and in the publications We Jive Like This and Dirty Washing, which are compilations of group and individual work with the Bosotso Jesters. He is presently on the editorial board of the Botsotso Publishers Collective. After Muila's performance, members will get a chance to perform their own poetry on the evening's theme “Father”, in celebration of Father's Day this month. Later in the Poet Pourri session they will be able to air their work on any subject they wish. The meeting takes place at 17h30 on June 9 in Adams Books Coffee Shop, Musgrave Centre. Entry is free and all are welcome, regardless of whether they write poetry. As there are no bookings, latecomers are advised to bring their own cushions or folding chairs.
