NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. Durban-based author Dr Chris Marnewick has just released his first novel, Shepherds & Butchers. Chris Marnewick grew up in the Limpopo bushveld and has degrees from Unisa, Potchefstroom and the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal. He taught litigation in New Zealand for five years and now practices law at the Durban bar. Shepherds and Butchers is a novel about a capital murder case set in the late 1980s. Making abundant use of non-fictional material in its detailed account of the impact of legal execution on everyone involved, it is a spell-binding courtroom drama which Helen Prejean, author of Dead Man Walking dubbed “unforgettable”.
