NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. Sirs It has been brought to my attention via the Advertising Standards Authority of South Africa that a certain Rev Reg Courtney of the Baptist Church in Underwood Road, Pinetown, has objected to the poster advertising Jack & His Big Stalk. He states in an email to the ASA that "My complaint is that the advertiser uses an enlarged penis to illustrate the show. This will appeal to people with warped minds and be disturbing to innocent children. This is forcing crudeness upon our society. This advertisement is immoral.” On The ASA form he states further that the image is "obscene" as it portrays "Jack's bean stalk as a giant penis growing from a lustful character" and is thus "distasteful & vulgar and imbarrising (sic)" As the producer of the adult pantomime, Jack & His Big Stalk currently running at the Catalina Theatre, I would hate to think that I had caused offence to the citizens of Durban and trust that this complaint is a "one- off". For this reason I wish to make a public apology. I must add, however, that I must have led an extremely sheltered life. I see the poster as a cheerful cartoon of a boy holding a pot plant. I have never seen a man whose private parts are green and curly with leaves sprouting with gay abandon. (And I most certainly never wish to!) Please forgive my innocence. SW Clarence Producer: Jack & His Big Stalk, 15 Madura Grove, Manor Gardens, 4001. 082 882 9869
