NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. Re ROCKY HORROR AUDITIONS (article first published on artSMart: 2003-12-31). The article reads: "The Rocky Horror Show tells the story of the misadventures of Brad and Janet, two hapless virgins from Denton who lose their way on a dark and stormy night. They seek help from the orally-inclined transsexual Transylvanian, Dr Frank ‘n Furter, at a haunted castle where time has no meaning. Although virtue is compromised and finally lost on that fateful night, good finally triumphs over evil." This may seem rather trivial, however, I could not help but feel rather annoyed when I read the final line of this brief synopsis of the Rocky Horror Show - "good finally triumphs over evil". It is as if the writer needed to add some words in and didn't really understand what the play is actually about. There is no GOOD or EVIL in the Rocky Horror Show. The play ends on a note of confusion and detachment as Brad, Janet and Dr. Everett Scott are left behind - the castle having taken off. A relationship is ruined and the three humans are left feeling rather degraded and dazed. There is no sense of evil succumbing to good or anything of the sort. Writers should get the facts straight. Regards, Bryce McNamara (B.Journ student, Rhodes University.) (”The Rocky Horror Show” is currently running at the Barnard Theatre at Gateway – see Supper Theatre)
