NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. M-Net is launching a brand new reality show next year. B ON MNET promises to make a star of the audience both on M-Net and on a dedicated DStv channel. M-Net was the first in the world to secure rights to this innovative concept, affirming the broadcaster’s position as a worldwide leader at the level of pioneering television and interactive content. The concept presents an opportunity for M-Net to deploy all of the interactive experience and resources developed for hit shows like Big Brother and Idols, while taking advantage of the understanding of the audience that these have created. Described as a cross between Candid Camera, Idols, talk-back radio (on TV) and Big Brother, B ON MNET allows anyone with anything special to say or do to be on TV. This revolutionary new format pushes the boundaries of audience participation, not only can they be involved in the outcome of a TV programme, but they can actually participate in the making thereof. B ON MNET uses a patented system, licensed by earth television network, for gathering broadcast quality content from remote cameras which are activated by cell phones. B ON MNET studios are being set up in four shopping centers around the country - Canal Walk in Cape Town, The Zone of Rosebank in Johannesburg, Menlyn Shopping Centre in Pretoria and Gateway Shopping Centre in Durban. The press publicity states: “It doesn’t matter if you can’t sing, or that you didn’t get picked for Big Brother – M-Net’s going to make you famous anyway.” Clips from these recordings will be screened on a dedicated B ON MNET channel 41 on DStv and on the B ON MNET 30-minute show on M-Net channel at 19h00 on Tuesdays (starting February 3). The content of M-Net show will be determined by audience votes, and will be developed from themes which run throughout the series, including the SASI Swimsuit Model Search, dating and other revolving weekly themes. Simply visit the B ON MNET studio, and using your mobile phone dial the number displayed to activate the camera. Once you have done your recording in the B ON MNET Studio, you have to log on to the M-Net online community at www.mnet.co.za, and supply your full details. If your recording is used, the system will send you a notification via SMS letting you know that you are about to B ON MNET So you don’t have to worry about missing your big moment of fame. Once selected, outstanding participants’ video clips will be converted and uploaded on the Internet allowing participants the opportunity to send them as "greeting cards" to their friends. Comments and opinions registered in the B ON MNET Studios can be extended to forum discussions online and viewers can review audience performances and respond to topics of interest. The Studios will be open from January 15 to the end of April.
