NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. M-Net is now showing the third season of Jacob’s Cross. The first two seasons of the top quality local drama captured the imagination of many DStv viewers across the continent and as a result of that M-Net decided to move this truly African series to M-Net’s prime time on a Wednesday night at 20h00. In previous seasons we met Jacob Makhubu, the son of a South African mother and a Nigerian father, as he travelled to Nigeria to secure backing for the business deal of a lifetime. But instead of the financial aid he sought from Chief Aboyami, head of the Nigerian Aboyami Empire, Jacob learned that the Chief was his true father. With this revelation, Jacob inherited not only a business empire, but also a family and a dream. At the beginning of season three, Jacob Abayomi, as he is now known, is the man of the moment. He had recently been named Businessman of the Year and his dreams of building a Pan-African empire are finally coming to fruition. His success in Nigeria with the Abayomi-Isoko oil deal has won him much credibility and popularity, but also the antagonism of the multinational oil companies. Globex, an American Petroleum giant, spearheads the antagonism and is set to take him down. The title role of Jacob Abayomi is portrayed by Hlomla Dandala. New characters to look out for in Season III are Lisa, played by Nina Milner of Innocent Times and Ella Blue, Billie played by Kim Cloete, Gloria played by Jennifer Steyn and Vusi Kunene who portrays the character of Paul.
