NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. In the style of the hit Step Up movies and the South African television reality show, Dans, Dans, Dans!, KZN’s aspirant young dancers will expose their untapped talent at Imbumba 2008. Presented by KZN DanceLink, in association with the National Creative Arts Youth Festival, Imbumba is an exciting showcase of new works created by award-winning and emerging choreographers to nurture young talent. The diverse programme offers everything from contemporary and hip-hop to classical Kathak and indigenous dance styles. A vital platform for dance development, Imbumba 2008 features short works by a variety of choreographers each of whom bring their unique style and creativity to the art of dance. Included in the programme are Siwela Sonke Dance Theatre trainees, Project Hheshe Nsizwa from Umlazi, the Kwa Mashu School of Dance, Nateshwar Dance Academy, Left Feet First, Uyaba Dance, Project Dudlu Ntombi, Kitsona’s Kids, the Stonebridge Cultural Movement, Cato Manor Vibe, God’s Golden Acre and the Minette de Klerk Dance Academy. Largely inspired by South Africa’s rich cultural heritage, the dance pieces celebrate the fusion of traditional and modern styles. The National Creative Arts Youth Festival, founded by the late Professor Elizabeth Sneddon, now in its 19th year, is a celebration of the achievements of South Africa’s youth. Directed at young, predominantly school-going people, the festival has achieved remarkable success in building a broad multi-cultural base and participation and is making a major contribution in building a united Nation based on values that serve the interest of the community in the new South Africa. KZN DanceLink is funded by the National Lotteries Distribution Trust Fund. The annual celebration of the province’s youth dance diversity and excellence has one performance only on May 7 at 11h00 at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre. Tickets R10 available by calling Lynn on 031 206 1696.
