NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. Potter Andrew Walford recently returned from a very successful one-man exhibition in Tokyo and his work now reflects a stronge Japanese flavour and he has many fascinating stories to tell of his experiences. But he’s not home for long. He is attending the Ceramic Millennium Symposium in Amsterdam in July where ceramists from all over the globe will congregate. Andrew Walford will present his mid-winter Open Day at his home and studio in Shongweni on August 8 from 10h00 to 18h00. Get there early if you want to take advantage of the many bargains on offer but not earlier than opening time as there will be no selling before 10h00. Andrew has a bargain table on which he offers what he calls `rejects’ but to the layman’s eyes they appear unmarred as the flaw is often virtually undetectable. The Walford Studio is situated high on a hill overlooking the Shongweni Valley and the Shongweni Dam. The views are superb so take a couple of hours off and simply revel in the unspoilt surroundings, have a cup of tea once you’ve seen the elegant display of pottery (and it’s always beautifully displayed) or just relax on the lawns and enjoy the view. Towards lunchtime, delicious breyani is also on sale. Phone (031) 769-1363 for more details or take the Shongweni exit off the freeway and follow the signs towards Shongweni Station for 8 km to B9.
